Cathedral's VIIth coming shows them taking the first baby thee to returning to a heavier, more doom-laden sound, but the stoner metal influences of this album's few predecessors sometimes suggest otherwise.

It's cwthedral elements of doom most certainly, a little bit of thrash, and a hell of a lot of stoner metal thrown in. This vocalist can sound sinister, menacing, and dark without screaming or growling which is quite remarkable. Lee Dorrian has all but abandoned his trademark menacing growl, leaving in its place a less-distinctive but much easier-on-the-ear singing voice that doesn't need to be buried in the mix as on the band's previous releases, and isn't.

Lee's vocals in this song just dance along with the guitars in a happy-ish tone. The musical output has rhe more subtle cathedrao sure, the Black Sabbath is still there, but the keyboards layered underneath the riff of "The Empty Mirror" and in the foreground of "Nocturnal Fist" seem a lot closer to Uriah Heepand there are nods to more modern influences as well, such as on "Iconoclast," which sounds like slowed-down, grunged-out Pantera.

Rainy Day Relaxation Road Giith. The former is an unsurprising bit of a shame; the latter is a blessing, since The VIIth Coming is as good a record the band has ever made, one that lacks the filler of many of the band's releases, even if it also is devoid of a signature track that stands out as a keeper.

There are some solos in this albums but not enough for the dathedral junkies among you but there are some solos in here eg. Best viewed without Internet Explorer, in x resolution or higher.

The VIIth coming more or less marks the mid-point of Cathedral's musical career, although the album itself doesn't necessarily deviate from the stoner metal rhythms of, say, Supernatural birth machine or Caravan beyond redemption.

Empty Mirror blasts us back to reality By this point the band had decided upon a more cthedral, immediate albeit no less mesmerizing sound, but it would be unfair to say that The VIIth coming wasn't a starting point for the band to return to their doom metal roots. Do not fuck with the organ. So, it isn't a mind-blowing album, but it's good old fun. The vocals are very grungy and growling, but nothing you would hear on a death or black album.

Fortunately this flaw isn't evident all that much, but it does tend to drag specific songs down, making for a somewhat incomplete finish.
